Green Morning Smoothie…Spice it up!

So, this recipe is one of my favourite quick and easy green morning smoothies.  Honestly,  I partially love it so much because of its bright appealing colour.   There is something about the colour of green in smoothies that can make the very cells of your body feel alive and invigorated. I was inspired to complete this morning drink with a finishing garnish of black pepper.  The  subtle spice brings out the refreshing flavour of both the veg and fresh mint.  Hence, the focus ingredient of todays green smoothie goes to Piper Nigrum – Black Pepper.

Peppercorns are the fruits of a wide leafed green flowering vine and are native to India.  Various varieties of Piper Nigrum can be found in almost every household around the world.  Moreover, the sale of peppercorns make up around 20% of the world’s total spice trade! Thus, what could be more suitable than literally spicing up your morning by adding bit of pepper to this glass of green smoothie goodness.

The health benefits of peppering up your green smoothie 

This common household spice has some incredible health benefits.  Medical studies have found that peperine, the active ingredient found in black pepper, can reduce inflammation and aid in digestion.  In addition,  black pepper can protect against oxidative stress and cellular damage associated with cancer development. Peperine is has a unique ability to readily absorb stimulates and can speed up drug metabolism.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Banana
  • 1/2 Cup Avacado
  • 1/2 Cup Courgette
  • 12-16 Leaves Basil Leaves
  • 1 tbsp Wheat Grass
  • 2 tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Kefir
  • 1/2 tsp Black Peper

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smoothie.  You can add more coconut milk depending on desired constancy.   * The courgette can be boiled beforehand to aid in the blending process.
